DIBRUGARH: In the light of intelligence reports that sympathisers of ‘Waris Punjab De’ (WPD) chief Amritpal Singh might attempt to stage protests outside the Dibrugarh Central Jail where the pro-Khalistan leader is currently lodged following his arrest in Punjab on Sunday, security agencies are keeping a keen lookout at all Dibrugarh-bound trains and flights originating from Punjab and Delhi.
Top police officials informed that they have received intelligence inputs about the strong possibility of Amritpal’s radical supporters heading for Dibrugarh, where he and his nine other aides have been lodged after they were booked under the stringent National Security Act (NSA), to express their support and solidarity with him.
Moreover, it is now revealed that, for the second time on Thursday, the three-member legal counsel team from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), Punjab will be arriving in Dibrugarh. On its first visit to the Dibrugarh jail on April 10, the team which comprises advocates Bhagwant Singh Sialka, Mandeep Sidhu and Rohit Sharma had earlier met the Waris Punjab De members.
On the same day, on Thursday, the family members of a few arrested Waris Punjab De members are also expected to arrive here to meet them. Until this time, only the wife and son of jailed Khalistani activist Daljeet Singh Kalsi have come to Dibrugarh jail to meet him. On April 20, Kalsi’s wife Narinder Kaur alias Neeru Kalsi, and their son Simarjeet Singh alias Sunny, met him in the jail. Kalsi has been in the Dibrugarh jail since March 19. Kalsi’s wife had filed a Habeas Corpus petition at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which enabled their visit.
Amritpal was transferred to Dibrugarh Central Jail, a high security jail which was upgraded with more CCTV cameras, after his arrest in Punjab. He has been kept in a solitary cell, away from his aides. Sources said jail staff serves him food inside his cell. The jail doctor is also regularly monitoring his health.
Reports suggest that teams from central intelligence agencies like NIA, IB are questioning him.
