Almost after four years or 1,444 days - the general body of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) met on October 23 in Mumbai today to the world’s richest organization. Sourav Ganguly headed BCCI call for the first annual general body meeting after four years.

As the new tenure rules, it is to take the mandatory three-year cooling-off period, Ganguly get only 278 days in this tenure as BCCI boss. As per the new BCCI constitution, he will complete six consecutive years as an office-bearer of a state association/BCCI on July 26, 2020, and to go into the mandatory three-year cooling-off period.

A state association can be in the chair for six consecutive years before the cooling-off becomes necessary. Ganguly has spent the rest of this period as president of the Bengal Cricket Association (CAB), on July 27, 2014, first taking charge as CAB joint secretary, and then appointed as its president on September 24, 2015, following the death of Dalmiya on September 20, 2015. Others, who have been elected to the BCCI, will have to vacate their positions in case they are holding any state associations, like Ganguly.

To run the world’s richest cricket body in January 2017 appointing a committee of Administrators (CoA), the BCCI had been virtually paralyzed since the 2013 IPL betting-fixing scandal broke out, and the Supreme Court is still hearing the case. Today at Mumbai’s Wankheda Stadium, Ganguly’s team takes charge of the BCCI at its headquarters, a brand new BCCI constitution, written by the SC-appointed Lodha Committee, comes into effect.

The two former Indian captains are present in the new BCCI general body meeting. For the first time, the BCCI has a permanent president to run in it. Ganguly is in the chair and Azharuddin is also present as a normal member of the BCCI general body. Azharuddin who arrived in Mumbai a few days ago and attended today’s meeting is looking to start a new inning as a cricket administrator.

To be part of the new nine-member Apex Council there are only three items of the general body meeting. The first is to elect the five office-bearers, the second is to elect the one Councillor of BCCI, and the third is to elect two representatives of the General Body of BCCI.
