Mumbai: Republic TV promoter and Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami was arrested by Mumbai Police on Wednesday morning. He was arrested on charges of abetment to suicide of Anvey Nayak who was a vendor for Republic TV. The suicide case dates back to 2018. Republic TV has hit back saying it is a clear case of vendetta against Goswami.

It is expected that Goswami will be taken to Alibaug for questioning regarding his connection with the case.

Earlier on Wednesday early morning, around 12 police officers from Mumbai Police arrived at Arnab's house to arrest him. Republic TV tweeted about his arrest claiming that it is an "abhorrent assault on Arnab Goswami by the police." Arnab was dragged into the police van and was physically assaulted, Republic TV said.

Goswami was arrested on the basis of a suicide note left by Anvey Nayak, who committed suicide in his Alibaug bungalow in May 2018. Nayak's mother was found dead too. In the suicide note, Nayak claimed that Arnab Goswami along with two other persons owed him around Rs 5 crores. It was earlier reported that Nayak committed suicide due to debt pressure.

The arrest comes amid charges against him by the Mumbai Police regarding his involvement in the TRP scam.

The arrest comes just a day after the Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh called Arnab 'the biggest hawala' operator of Mumbai.

The Mumbai Police has however said that they have not arrested Goswami, he has just been detained.
