BJP Leader Dies in Clash with Police in Patna Protest over Bihar Govt’s Teacher Recruitment Policy

PATNA: Clashes with the police erupted during an opposition protest against the Nitish Kumar government’s teacher recruitment policy in Patna, led to the death of a BJP leader allegedly due to the injuries he sustained during a baton charge by the cops.

BJP’s former Deputy CM of Bihar Sushil Modi, while speaking about the incident, said, “It is so unfortunate that one of our party workers died owing to a lathicharge by the police. He died on the way to the hospital.”

Modi added that a murder case against the police will be lodged, holding Nitish Kumar responsible for the incident.

The police had to resort to bursting tear gas shells and use water cannons to chase away thousands of BJP workers, including senior leaders, who were trying to march towards the Bihar Vidhan Sabha.

Many of the BJP workers sported saffron kurtas, saris, salwar suits and bandanas. They walked waving the party flag and shouting slogans even as some of them stationed themselves atop a “prachar rath” (campaign vehicle).

Lusty slogans rent the air, with protestors shouting slogans like “Nitish Tejashwi istifa do” (Nitish Kumar, Tejashwi must resign), as the procession managed to cover a distance of about one kilometre before it hit the barricades put up at the Dak Bungalow crossing.

Before the march started off from Gandhi Maidan, state BJP president Samrat Choudhary said that the Opposition party was holding the government to account, especially Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, for promising “10 lakh jobs”.

“Everybody knows who made that rhetorical promise. Only one individual had done so. It is, now, the time to deliver,” said Choudhary. He was referring to the promises made during the 2020 assembly poll campaign of the young RJD leader whose party secured victory and rode to power last year after ousting the BJP, marking the exit of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar from the NDA.

Meanwhile, the Bihar government announced it was cancelling the leaves of all teachers for a week to thwart the protests by the BJP over the state’s recently amended recruitment policy. The district magistrates also asked the Education Department to inspect all state-run schools on Thursday to check the attendance of teachers, reports suggested.
