KOLKATA: BJP leader Firoze Kamal Gazi alias Babu Master was attacked while he was on his way to Kolkata on Saturday.

According to police, Gazi received splinter injuries when miscreants attacked his car in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district. Gazi was on his way to Kolkata when miscreants attacked his car with crude bombs on Basanti Highway.

According to reports, at least 15 miscreants attacked Babu Master's SUV near Lauhati bridge, barely 200 metres away from Lauhati police outpost, when the leader was returning to Kolkata from Basirhat. The miscreants hurled few crude bombs and fired several rounds of bullets at the vehicle, reports said.

Gazi and his driver were injured in the attack. They were admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata. According to reports, Gazi is out of danger but will be kept under observation.

Meanwhile, the police said they are investigating the attack.

Gazi had recently joined the BJP. He was earlier with the Trinamool Congress. He quit TMC in December last year.

Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikary visited Firoze Gazi at the hospital on Saturday evening. He alleged that criminal members of Trinamool Congress orchestrated the attack on Gazi.

Adhikary took to Twitter to air his allegations. He wrote, "Earlier this evening, visited my friend Babu Master in the Hospital. He was mercilessly attacked by criminal elements from the @AITCofficial."

West Bengal Food and Supplies Minister and senior Trinamool Congress leader Jyotipriya Mallick denied Adhikary's accusations on the attack. Mallick is the district president of TMC North 24 Parganas district.

Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress MP Dinesh Trivedi quit the party and resigned from the Rajya Sabha. Trivedi is the fourth senior TMC leader to quit the incumbent party in West Bengal in the last two months. Suvendu Adhikari quit TMC in December 2020 and joined the BJP. Rajib Banerjee quit the party this year in January and switched over to the BJP. Laxmi Ratan Shukla quit the party after expressing his desire to quit politics.
