BJP’s Rajasthan MP Om Birla unanimously elected as New Speaker of Lok Sabha

Guwahati: NDA nominee Om Birla has been collectively elected as the New Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha.

All major political parties including Congress, DMK, TMC, BJD, YSR Congress, JD (U) and Shiv Sena supported the motion moved by Prime Minister and Leader of the House, Narendra Modi to choose Birla as the Speaker.

Later, Pro-tem speaker Dr. Virendra Kumar declared Birla as Speaker.

Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Om Birla saying his life has been devoted to service and Jan Seva has been the focal point of his politics.

The Prime Minister expressed confidence that Birla will preside over the proceedings of the Lok Sabha in an exceptional manner.

In his speech, newly elected Speaker Om Birla thanked all the members of the House for reposing faith in him. He said, the Chair of the Speaker should be impartial and assured all the members to give fair opportunities to them. Earlier, leaders of all the political parties congratulated Birla for being chosen as the Speaker and assured their support for the smooth functioning of the House. Later, the Prime Minister also introduced the members of Council of Ministers to the House.

The last Speaker of the Lok Sabha was Sumitra Mahajan but this time, she chose not to contest the Lok Sabha elections.

Earlier Amita Birla, wife of Om Birla said, “It is a very proud and a happy moment for us. We are very thankful to the cabinet for choosing him.”

The election of the Lok Sabha speaker was held on the Day 2 of Budget Session i.e on Tuesday. As per sources, the Opposition will also be supporting Om Birla to be elected as the next speaker of Lok Sabha.
