The loss-making public sector units of India Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and MTNL failed to clear the July month salary to a total of its 1.09 lakh employee. As stated by a union leader, the companies could not clear the salaries to its employees as the companies at present are suffering from major losses.
The BSNL Chairman and Managing Director P K Purwar have, however, stated that the salaries of its employees will be made even though a bit lately. As stated by the MD, the salaries will be dispatched on August 5. However, there are reports of a communication gap between the union leader and the authorities of the company for which the Union leader speaks of no such information in his hands. He says that the matter of disbursal of the salary on the said date is not in the knowledge of the union.
All India Unions and Associations of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (AUAB), Convenor P Abhimanyu told media, "Salary for the month of July has not come. There is also no information when will it be credited."
At the same time, the BSNL CMD has another statement to make in which he assures the employees of their salary on August 5. Purwar said, "Funds are being arranged through internal accruals.“
This is to be noted at this point that BSNL, at present, has 1.76 lakh employees across India while there are 22,000 employees in MTNL. At a time of cut-throat competition posed by the private sector telecom operators, the public sector telecom operator has failed to meet the growing demands and the high-speed internet demands of the consumers. Hence, the companies too are running under losses and have failed in generating the revenues required for paying salaries to its employees.
BSNL pays a total of Rs 750 -780 crore as salary to its employees every month and the salary paid by MTNL ranges up to Rs. 160 crore.
