NEW DELHI: Atul Rai from Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), accused of rape, has been granted two days parole to attend oath taking ceremony as Member of Parliament in New Delhi.

The BSP candidate from the Ghosi Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh is in jail. An earlier bail plea by him was rejected by the high court.

Justice Ramesh Sinha who granted the parole stated that Rai will go to Delhi on Jan 29 under police custody. After taking the oath he will be back in custody.

An FIR was registered against Rai in a police station in Varanasi by a college student on May 1. The victim had alleged that Rai had sexually assaulted her.

Rai’s counsel had contended that it was a politically motivated move to prevent him from campaigning in the general election and eventually sabotage his prospect as a candidate from the constituency.
