CAA row: Court dismisses plea seeking shift in location of protests at Shaheen Bagh

NEW DELHI: At Delhi's Shaheen Bagh, women protestors have been peacefully protesting against CAA and NRC for almost a month now. The sit-in protests have continued despite bad weather.

The Delhi High Court on Friday turned down a plea filed by IGNOU student Tushar Sachdev asking for the removal of protestors to another area citing traffic movement and damage to public property as reasons.

"Lakhs of people are suffering and it is also a issue for people in emergency. The protesters have put barricades and heavy stones on the side of the roads and are not even allowing pedestrians to pass. The protesters have also damaged the dividers and other public properties causing loss to the government exchequer," the plea read.

A division bench of the court presided by Chief Justice D.N. Patel and Justice C. Harishankar dismissed the plea.

Various parts of the country have been protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) which aims to protect religiously persecuted Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan by giving them Indian Citizenship. The cut-off date for those to be given citizenship in India has been fixed at, on or before 31 December 2014.
