Case Filed Against Twitter over Content on Child Pornography

A child pornography lawsuit has been filed against Twitter in Delhi, the fourth against the social media site since it lost legal protection for content uploaded by users amid a major dispute with the government. The new complaint was filed in accordance with the Posco Act and the IT Act. 

The case was filed by the Delhi Police's Cyber Cell in response to a complaint filed by the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights, or NCPCR.

The NCPCR said in their complaint that pornographic content involving children was constantly being posted on Twitter. 

The commission, which has previously complained about this issue, has sent two letters to the Cyber Cell and the Delhi Police Commissioner. It has also summoned a senior officer from the Cyber Cell to testify before it on June 29. 

Earlier this month, a complaint was filed in Ghaziabad against Twitter in connection with comments about an alleged attack on a Muslim man. 

The case is currently before the Supreme Court after Twitter India CEO Manish Maheshwari was granted bail by the Karnataka High Court. The ruling has been challenged in the Supreme Court by the Uttar Pradesh police. 

Mr Maheshwari was also identified in another First Information Report (also filed in Uttar Pradesh) in connection with an inaccurate map of India on the Twitter website; the map depicted Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh as separate countries, threading India's sovereignty.  

Another FIR has been filed against Mr Maheshwari in Madhya Pradesh, alleging the same thing. 

Twitter was stripped of legal protection from punishment for user content earlier this month for failing to comply with new digital regulations, including the hiring of Indian employees for the grievance and redressal system. 

Twitter had a spat with the government over the new IT laws, which it said were unconstitutional. The controversy erupted after it labelled tweets by BJP leaders on a purported "Congress toolkit" as "manipulated media."
