CBI recovers Cash, gold and other assets worth lakhs from an employee of AG office in Imphal

NEW DELHI: On Friday the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recovered more than Rs 31 lakh in cash, gold ornaments worth Rs 18 lakh, bank documents and papers related to many properties, during a search operation at the office and residential premises of a senior accountant in the office of Accountant General (AG) in Imphal (Manipur).

During the search operation, the CBI found 78 Pension Passbooks with ATMs of various pensioners and other implicating documents including papers related to investments in LIC banks, paddy lands, purchase of other properties, construction of a multi-story buildings and other documents.

The senior accountant identified as Yumnam Sharat Meitei is being questioned by the CBI for allegedly acquiring these assets illegally.

Meitei joined the AG office in 1988 and got promoted in 2006.

A case was registered against Yumnam Sharat Meitei under various sections for allegedly holding disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs 1,40,37,387.

Yumnam Sharat Meitei obtained huge transportable and immovable properties between January 1, 2010 and October 30, 2019, in his name and his family members' name. These estates were disproportionate to his known sources of income, said an official.
