CJI Ranjan Gogoi Recommends Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde As His Successor

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi, in a letter written to the Government on Friday, reportedly recommended the name of Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde as his successor.

CJI, Ranjan Gogoi from Assam will be retiring from his post this November. According to sources, Justice Gogoi wrote that the government start the process of appointing Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde as the next Chief Justice of India.

Sources said, Justice Gogoi has recommended his name according to the convention that the next senior judge should be his successor, Justice Bobde being the number 2 in seniority.

Justice Bobde, born in 1956, is a resident of Nagpur, Maharashtra. He is currently the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. His retirement is due on April 23, 2021.

Justice Bobde studied at Nagpur University and later joined the Bombay High Court in 2000 as the additional judge. He was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in 2012.

CJI Ranjan Gogoi was appointed as the 46th Chief Justice of India on October 3, 2018. He has a tenure of 13 months and 15 days while Justice Bobde, who will be sworn in as CJI on November 18, will have a tenure of about 18 months.

According to the Memorandum of Procedure, appointment to the office of the Chief Justice of India should be of the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court considered who fit to hold the office.

According to this process, after receiving the CJI's recommendation, the law minister puts it before the prime minister who advises the president on the matter.
