New Delhi: In a move to name and shame corrupt cops, the union home ministry has decided to publicise photos of police personnel involved in corrupt practices.
In a missive to all the police heads, the ministry said, "action against corrupt police officials be given due publicity on social media; photographs of corrupt police officials be displayed at police stations along with details on incidents in which they were involved".
The police officers and personnel whose pictures will be displayed in the police stations will also have the citation of their crime. The pictures will be published on social media as well.
This decision was taken as a part of the government's initiative to improve 'police image and the public connect'.
The move would also include corrupt senior IPS officers.
In the light of the present initiative, police forces will have to strengthen their internal vigilance unit to get hold of corrupt policemen.
Acute manpower shortage, duty fatigue and desertions are being seen as some of the reasons for corruption among cops.
According to the initiative, the government has also instructed police heads to form an in-house team to analyse social media content and to aim to increase police outreach.
The directive suggested to use local language along with Hindi and English to disseminate content on social media for maximum outreach. Also, small uniformed police foot patrol teams will be used to increase police visibility and pictures and videos of the same will be circulated to improve police image.
The videos and pictures showing police sensitivity will be widely shared and spread across various online platforms to highlight the good image of police officials.
