COVID-19: Madurai beggar donates Rs 90,000 to CM's relief fund in 9 instalments

Guwahati: An alms seeker in Madurai donated Rs 10,000 to district collector TG Vinay on Monday as contribution towards Covid-19 relief fund.

Worth mentioning is that man, a certain Poolpandian, has donated Rs 90,000 so far for the Chief Ministers Relief Fund in the last three months through the district administration.

Poolpandian made his initial contribution of Rs 10,000 on May 18. Afterward, he made eight more visits to the collector office, donating Rs 10,000 each time.

On the occasion of Independence Day, the district collector had included Poolpandian's name on the list of awardees. However, he could not be tracked for the event since he does not stay in a place.

Notably, officials gave a sigh of relief when they spotted him during his ninth visit to the collector office on Monday and took him directly to the collector's chamber.

Poolpandi is a native of Tuticorin district who was forced to beg as his two sons refused to look after him.

As per reports, earlier, he had donated money to government schools for the purchase of tables, chairs, and creating water facilities.

He was one among those who were stranded in Madurai during the lockdown imposed by the government.

He was shifted to a temporary shelter established by the Madurai Corporation, where food and other basic requirements were taken care of.

Later, he left the place and started donating money obtained through alms.
