Cyclone Biparjoy Turns Into Very Severe Storm; Southwestern States To Be Affected: IMD

NEW DELHI: In a bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday, it was stated that Cyclone 'Biparjoy' has increased in intensity to turn into a very severe storm, even as it made its way almost northwards.

The latest bulletin updated by IMD at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, stated that, in the next 24 hours, the cyclone is expected to move almost northwards, with its intensity retained. In the next 3 days, it is expected to move towards the north-northwest.

The IMD has posted a warning of resulting rough weather and sea conditions in the southwestern states, with wind speeds set to reach 135-145 kmph, and intensifying up to 160 kmph in the next three to four days. Fishermen have been warned by the IMD not to venture into the sea.

The position of the cyclonic storm, at 2:30 am on June 7, was seen in place approximately 900 km west-southwest of Goa, 1020 km to the southwest of Mumbai, 1090 km to south-southwest of Porbandar, and 1380 km to the south of Karachi, for nearly three hours.

The impact of the cyclone is likely to be faced in coastal areas of Lakshadweep, Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra.

Cyclone Biparjoy’s effect is expected to be felt in many southwestern states. A wind warning has been issued by the IMD in these regions for the next five days.

As of June 7, gale winds with speeds of 80-90 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 100 kmph, are most likely to strike the east-central Arabian Sea and the Arabian Sea’s west-central and southeast nearby areas.

Towards the evening, in the same area, these winds are expected to reach 95-105 kmph, gusting up to 115 kmph. Adjoining coasts of north Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa are thus likely to be most affected by the gale.

On June 8, the wind speeds are expected to increase further, reaching 115-125 kmph, gusting up to 140 kmph from the evening. Areas along the Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra coasts will experience strong winds.

The next day of June 9, wind speeds may shoot up to 135-145 kmph, intensifying up to 160 kmph in the evening, hitting the adjacent areas of the South Arabian Sea, Karnataka, and the coasts of Goa and Maharashtra.

The IMD has issued a warning to fishermen not to venture into the sea until June 10, to ensure their safety. Those now fishing at sea have been advised to come back to the coast.
