Shimla: A 13-year-old girl from the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, who was declared brain dead, has given a new lease of life to six patients through transplantation of her heart, liver, kidneys, pancreas, and corneas at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh.

She was declared brain dead after she met with a bicycle accident and suffered a head injury.

But the death of the little girl did not go in vain as her organs gave new hope in life to six patients struggling with their life.

The girl identified as Muskan Grover, a resident of the Solan district in Himachal Pradesh sustained injuries on her head while she was riding a bicycle on 24th March 2022.

Muskan was admitted to the Civil Hospital in Solan for preliminary medical treatment but due to her condition getting severe she was shifted to the PGIMER.

On 2nd April, the girl was declared brain dead by the experts at the institute and therefore the transplant coordinators approached the family of Muskan for organ donation.

The family members showed exemplary courage took the decision not to let their child's tragic death go in vain and agreed to organ donation.

Notably, all organ transplantation was completed within two days with the last transplant on Monday 4th April. The retrieved corneas gave the vision of two of the corneal blind patients at the PGIMER.

The retrieved heart of the 13-year-old girl was transplanted to a patient in the MGN Healthcare Chennai found as a matching recipient while her kidneys, pancreas, and liver were transplanted in PGIMER.

The nephrology and hepatology departments at PGIMER also identified many other potential recipients but after the cross match, 3 recipients were selected for donated liver, kidneys, and combined pancreas.

The director of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Professor Surjit Singh said that it is unexpected and unimaginable that someone thinks of saving the lives of some stranger amid the tragic loss of one's child.

The family of Muskan has this much courage to do something for the people even at the moment when their whole world crashed with the demise of Muskan said the director. He added that the institute is deeply indebted to them.
