NEW DELHI: Customs officials in Delhi found over 3,900 grams of the drug MDMA, in a shipment of lehengas, that was being sent to Australia. According to the customs officials, the seized drug is worth Rs 1.7 crore.

The shipment was seized at the Foreign Post Office (PFO) on February 9 by intelligence officials based in Delhi. The drugs were concealed inside the delivery parcel of the lehengas.

Delhi Customs said they found over 3,900 grams of the drug MDMA. The drugs were found hidden within the intricate work on the traditional Indian ethnic wear.

Delhi Customs wrote on their official Twitter handle, "ACC Export Commissionerate at FPO, New Delhi seized 3920 gms of MDMA from 1 parcel destined for Australia. MDMA was concealed between the golden lace of the lehngas. Estimated street price is around Rs. 1.7 crores."

A person may experience the intoxicating effects of MDMA, primarily used for recreational purposes, commonly known by its street name 'ecstasy' or 'molly', within 30 minutes after taking a single dose. Known effects of this psychoactive drug include an enhanced sense of well-being, increased extroversion, agony or empathy toward others, and a willingness to discuss emotionally-charged memories.

MDMA is known to cause several adverse health effects. It is a potentially dangerous drug that is chemically similar to both stimulants and hallucinogens. This synthetic drug can lead to panic attacks and in severe cases a loss of consciousness or death.

Since the beginning of this year, police and narcotics bureau have seized more than 5 crore rupees worth of MDMA from different cities in India, such as Bengaluru, Indore, Mumbai, Ahmedabad.

Earlier on February 7, customs officials in Delhi seized around 60 lakh cigarettes of a foreign brand worth Rs 7.5 crore at ICD Jhattipur, Panipat. The container was falsely declared as aluminium scrap. Further investigation into the seize is under progress.
