Guwahati: Amid the steady and alarming rise in COVID-19 cases across India, the number of tragedies has also continued to climb upwards. In one of the most shocking incidents in recent memory, a 37-year-old journalist who was undergoing treatment for the respiratory disease at the AIIMS Trauma center, jumped to death from the fourth floor of the building on Monday.

According to reports, the journalist was working for a prominent Hindi newspaper and was a resident of the Bhajanpura area in Northeast Delhi. He jumped from the 4th floor around 2 pm, and although the doctors rushed him to the ICU in a bid to revive him, it proved to be too late.

The journalist was admitted to the COVID-19 ward at the Trauma Centre on June 24 after testing positive for the dreaded contagion, said Devender Arya, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest).

Arya said that the man had been admitted to AIIMS Trauma Centre on June 24 and was apparently shifted to a High Dependency Unit at the hospital on the first floor. A doctor also revealed to media persons that the journalist had also had surgery for brain tumor.

This incident has been reported at a time when the number of COVID-19 cases in the national capital is continuing to increase at an unprecedented rate. With 2,244 fresh infections, the coronavirus cases in Delhi neared 1 lakh to stand at 99,444 on Sunday, while the death toll mounted to 3,067 with 63 new fatalities. 71,339 patients have recovered and been discharged so far, while the number of active cases stood at 25,038. As many as 6,43,504 tests have been conducted so far in the capital city.

Meanwhile, in its bid to formulate strategies to deal with the virus, the Government of Delhi has planned to set up a COVID-19 War Room, where there will be constant monitoring of the situation in regards to the spread of the virus.
