Delhi Wakes Up To Breathe Hazardous Air After Fireworks On Diwali Night

NEW DELHI: After the massive celebration of Diwali with fireworks on Thursday night the national capital, Delhi on Friday 5 November woke up with hazardous air to breathe.

On Friday morning at the area of Janpath in New Delhi, the concentrations of air pollution meter (PM) 2.5 stood at 655.07.

Numerous people residing in the national capital, Delhi complained about the health problems caused by air pollution. They are facing problems like watery eyes, itchy throat, and experiencing issues while breathing. Bursting fireworks has become a major issue in the state as people hugely suffer from air pollution every year during the celebration of Diwali.

Though the Delhi government earlier imposed a ban on bursting fireworks the people living in Delhi didn't follow as they burnt firecrackers in a huge quantity to celebrate Diwali on Thursday night. The quality of air in the national capital, Delhi was already affected by severe degradation because of the farm fires from the neighbouring states of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. The air quality in Delhi got further degraded as people started bursting fireworks making a mockery of the ban imposed by the Government of Delhi.

According to the report from SAFAR, The system of air quality and weather forecasting and Research run by the center, the affected air from bursting firecrackers cannot be expected to improve until the evening of Sunday. SAFAR informed that the overall quality of air in Delhi jumped fast into the upper end of the extremely poor category and will continue to fall now, expected to transform from severe to very poor by tonight.

SAFAR has further added that if the fireworks are burned even 50% of last year, then by midnight PM2.5 will enter into the category of 'severe' and shoot up speedily by today morning with AQI crossing 500+.
