Delhi: Woman Beats Mother-in-Law to Death Using Frying Pan, Case Registered

NEW DELHI: Murder, kidnapping, and rape have been synonymous with Delhi throughout the years. Sarmistha Som, a woman in her 40s, killed her mother-in-law with a frying pan in South Delhi's Neb Sarai neighborhood. According to local police, the 86-year-old mother-in-law was suffering from arthritis, which may have frustrated the daughter-in-law or made her tired of caring for the mother.

Since 2014, Surjit Som (51), his wife Sarmishta Som (48), and their 16-year-old daughter have resided in Swastik Residency in Neb Sarai. The pair is originally from Kolkata, but the husband's mother was living alone in West Bengal at the time. Later, he moved his mother into a flat in front of his own. Surjit and his daughter verified Sarmishta's strained connection with his mother-in-law.

Police began investigating after receiving information from the accuser's husband's friend Hasi Som (Mother-in-law), who collapsed in her flat and died from heavy bleeding. When the mother-in-law was discovered lying in the kitchen, she had many injuries on her face and skull.

Surjit claims to have CCTV footage on his phone's camera as he observes his mother's everyday routine. He also informed the cops that the camera was not operational owing to a power outage on the day of the incident. Surjit's wife, most notably, was present in the flat on the day of the occurrence.

Initially, neither family members nor neighbors suspected a crime. On April 29, the body was transferred to the AIIMS mortuary, and an autopsy was performed. However, it was evident from the post-mortem report that those were not normal injuries, and doctors encouraged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation.

Sarmishta was observed entering the flat with a frying pan in her hand and afterward following Hasi Som to the kitchen, which was not covered by CCTV. However, the mother-in-law was clearly heard crying in anguish on the CCTV tape.

According to police, a complaint under IPC section 302 has been lodged and Sarmishta has been detained based on the findings of the investigation, Surjeet's statement, CCTV footage, and the post-mortem report.
