Bhopal: A 6.7-carat diamond has been mined by a farmer in Madhya Pradesh in its Panna district. The land on which the diamond was mined was taken on lease from the government.

The farmer, Prakash Majumdar, has already mined diamonds five times, previously. The 6.7-carat diamond is the sixth diamond mined by Prakash in a period of two years.

Last year, the farmer had mined a 7.44-carat diamond. He has previously weighed diamonds weighing between 2-2.5 carats in the last two years.

In the upcoming auction, the 6.7-carat diamond will be put up for sale. This was announced by an in-charge diamond officer, Nutan Jain. The price of the diamond will be fixed according to government guidelines.

The money received from the auction will be shared between Prakash and four others who were his partners in quarrying the mine.

"We are five partners. We got the diamond weighing 6.47 carat, which we deposited at the Government Diamond Office," said Prakash on Friday. The diamond was found in a mine in Jaruapur village.

The proceeds from the auction of the raw diamond will be handed over to the farmer after the deduction of government royalty and taxes, according to official sources.

The diamond reportedly is expected to fetch a value of around Rs. 30 lakhs in the auction.

The district of Panna in Madhya Pradesh is believed to have diamond reserves of 12 lakh carats. Small patches of land in the reserve are given to small farmers and labourers on lease by the state government to mine diamonds and deposit them with the district mining officer.
