Odisha: The 800-km range Nirbhay cruise missile was launched by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The missile was launched from the test facility of Odisha into the Bay of Bengal, but they decided to abort it after a few minutes.

A government official said that the missile, which was fired at 10.30 am, developed a snag and was aborted 8 minutes after the launch.

The 10th missile to be fired by DRDO in the last 35 days, Nirbhay is a subsonic missile. It flies at speed of 0.7 Mach. It has both the sea-skimming and terrain hugging capacity, which helps the missile to stay under the enemy radar to avoid detection.

India's emphasis on the development and deployment of modern-age stand-off weapon is a reaction to China's mobilisation of troops and support elements in East Ladakh.

People familiar with the matter said that there would be another trial that DRDO will conduct in a few months' time. This will pave the way for missile's introduction to the Indian military and deployment on the borders.

The officials also said that there is a need for scientists to analyse the data generated during these tests. This will help in figuring the modifications which are needed.
