Anannyah Kumari Alex, the first transgender candidate from Kerala to seek nomination in the recently conducted Assembly election, allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday, weeks after complaining about a sex-reassignment operation gone terribly wrong. Alex, who was also the first in her community to become a radio DJ, was discovered hanging in her Kochi flat.

Alex once stated that if transgender people reach the mainstream, there would undoubtedly be colourful changes in society. She was a make-up artist and a freelance fashion stylist, according to reports.

Alex had just filed medical negligence claims against a doctor and a private hospital and was seeking justice in the issue. She stated that she had been dealing with significant health difficulties after undergoing sex-reassignment surgery in June of last year. She said that even a year after the surgery, she was unable to work owing to significant physical discomfort.

"I'm a victim of gross medical negligence. My private part looks like a piece of meat, it has no resemblance to a vagina. I want to conduct a resurgery, I want justice," she was cited in an article by The News Minute.

Alex was previously in the headlines for filing her nomination as an Assembly election candidate in the Malappuram district's Vengara seat. She was slated to run as a Democratic Social Justice Party (DSJP) candidate against Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader PK Kunjalikutty. She did, however, halt her campaign a day before the election, claiming that she was being harassed and had received death threats from officials of her own party. Because she was unable to withdraw her nomination at the time, she advised people not to support the DSJP.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George ordered an investigation into the death on Wednesday. Anannyah's friends has filed a complaint with the chief minister, requesting an investigation into her death. The inquiry is still ongoing, and the police are awaiting the postmortem report.
