GC Murmu becomes first tribal to take charge as Comptroller and Auditor-General of India

Guwahati: At a ceremony held today at 10:30 am in the Ashoka Hall, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Girish Chandra Murmu was sworn in as the Comptroller and Auditor-General of India. He made and subscribed to the oath of office before the President, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and others.

The finance ministry notification signed by joint secretary Rajiv Kumar Mishra read, "By virtue of the power vested in him by clause 1 of article 148 of the Constitution of India, the President has been pleased to appoint Shri Girish Chandra Murmu to be the Comptroller and Auditor General of India with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office."

Notably, Girish Chandra Murmu is the first tribal to hold the post of CAG. Murmu stepped down as the Jammu and Kashmir's Lieutenant Governor on Wednesday and was appointed the CAG on Thursday.

As the CAG, Girish Chandra Murmu will now be responsible for auditing all expenditures of the state and central Governments. He has a tenure up to November 20, 2024.

Meanwhile, former Union minister Manoj Sinha was sworn in as the new Jammu and Kashmir L-G on Friday.

Murmu is a 1985 IAS officer who quit the service weeks before his retirement last year. The bureaucrat hails from Odisha's Betnoti town in tribal-dominated Mayurbhanj district.

When he took charge as the first L-G of Jammu and Kashmir on 31 October 2019, his town and village had celebrated the achievement.

His mother too had expressed her joy when he was chosen as the L-G of Kashmir after the erstwhile state was bifurcated into two Union Territories on August 5.

The GC Murmu-led J&K administration also faced controversy over its opposition to restoring 4G internet services in the union territory, citing "terror threat" as the reason for not doing so.
