Ghulam Nabi Azad Praises PM Modi, Labels Him A ‘Statesman’

NEW DELHI: Ghulam Nabi Azad, the former Congress leader from Jammu & Kashmir, on Tuesday showered praises on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a statesman who never hit back, despite the former’s criticism on issues like Article 370, Citizenship Amendment Act or hijab row.

Azad said in an interview that he must give credit to Modi, “For what I did to him, he was too generous. As Leader of the Opposition I did not spare him on any issue, be it Article 370 or CAA or hijab. I got some Bills totally failed but I must give him the credit that he behaved like a statesman, not taking revenge for that,” he said.

Azad's remark is in sharp contrast to those of opposition leaders who accuse the Modi government of gagging its critics by misusing agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

However, this is not the first time that the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister has heaped praises on the prime minister. In 2021 Azad said he appreciated Modi for not withholding the fact that he hails from a village and that he sold tea.

Former Congress leader Azad's statement came in response of PM Modi praising him in turn, calling the J&K leader ‘a true friend'. “Power comes and goes, but only a few know how to digest it. Therefore, as a friend, I respect him for the things he has done over the years”, the PM Modi is reported as saying

Even last year, Azad once again spoken in praise of the PM, admitting that his earlier perception of Narendra Modi was wrong.

Azad had resigned from the Congress last year by releasing an explosive resignation letter, lambasting the Gandhis. In his letter, he had slammed Rahul Gandhi labelling him a ‘non-serious’ politician.

Azad explained that all this happened because a non-serious individual at the helm of the party was foisted by the Congress leadership in the past 8 years. Ghulam Nabi Azad stated this fact as the reason why the Congress made way for the BJP at both the national level and the state level.
