Guwahati: With the ongoing pandemic scenario, the 74th Independence Day was observed with a silent gusto on Saturday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi unfurled the Tricolour at New Delhi's Red Fort.

Following the coronavirus protocols, a limited number of audience was allowed to witness Modi give his seventh consecutive address at the iconic monument to the country.

Addressing to the nation on I-day, he spoke about various things. Starting from COVID-19 to the 'COVID Warriors' to the soldiers protecting our borders, these were many highlights in his address.

In his speech, he also spoke about women empowerment and the initiatives the government has brought about for the women of this nation.

During this process, PM Modi made an unexpected remark that has won him unadulterated praise from netizens. PM Modi talked about sanitary pads, which is probably the first time an Indian PM has talked about it on a national platform.

"The government has always been concerned about the health of our daughters and sisters. Through 6,000 Janaushdhi centers, about 5 crore women have got sanitary pads at Re 1", he said.

While talking about women empowerment, he cited the government's efforts at eradicating malnutrition among women, more women in combat roles for the Navy and the Air Force, and the abolishing of Triple Talaq for Muslim women.

Sanitary pads being talked about at a public platform on a day like Independence Day has struck a chord with the public across India. Netizens stormed to social media and appreciated Modi for breaking a taboo.
