New Delhi: ICMR reported on Tuesday the third spike in COVID-19 cases in Delhi with factors like pollution, cold weather and festivals playing a major role in the rise of the infections.

"A third spike has come now in Delhi after the first two spikes in June and September, which is showing more cases than before," said ICMR Director General Balram Bhargava.

Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said that at the time of festivals or while attending marriages when people gather and do not follow COVID-19 appropriate behavior, there are high chances of the spread of the virus.

Bhushan said that the figure of 15,000 is an estimate and is not a certain figure.

"We drew the attention of the administration that testing should not only be done in large numbers but also must be targeted, which means those places where there is a potential for the spread of the infection like markets, workplaces, factories or places where religious gatherings are held testing must be done and the Delhi government has started such testing," he said.

"Last week, there have been more than 7,000 cases per day but in the last 24 hours over 5,000 cases were reported so there is some decline but we have to see if this trend stays for long," he added.
