New Delhi: India is all set to launch the Covid 19 vaccination campaign from tomorrow (16 January), this was informed by the central government on January 9 in a press release.
The rollout of the Covid-19 vaccine is likely to cover 3 lakh frontline healthcare workers across 3,006 sites in the country.
"The vaccination drive will give priority to the healthcare workers and the frontline workers who are estimated to be around 3 crores, followed by those who are above 50 years of age and the under-50 population groups with co-morbidities numbering around 27 crores," stated in the press release.
Sharing the information, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his Twitter handle and wrote, "On 16th January, India takes a landmark step forward in fighting COVID-19. Starting that day, India's nation-wide vaccination drive begins. Priority will be given to our brave doctors, healthcare workers, frontline workers including Safai Karamcharis."
PM Modi to review the status of COVID-19 in the country along with the preparedness of the states and UTs for Covid vaccination chaired a high-level meeting on January 9, 2021. Cabinet Secretary, Principal Secretary to PM, Health Secretary, and other senior officials have attended the meeting.
PM Modi also apprised about the Co-WIN Vaccine Delivery Management System.
PM Modi praising India's fight against COVID-19 said we are one of the countries with the lowest fatality rate and the highest recovery rate. The way the country stood together during the global pandemic was unparalleled. He further stated that being the world's pharmacy, India has supplied important medicines to all those in need in the world and continues to do so.
After the detailed review, it was decided to begin the Covid 19 vaccination drive from January 16 following the ongoing festivals including Lohri, Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Magh Bihu etc.
Drugs regulator in India recently approved Oxford COVID-19 vaccine Covishield, manufactured by the Serum Institute, and the indigenously developed Bharat Biotech's Covaxin for restricted emergency use in the country.
