Indian business tycoon Azim Premji emerges as the most generous Indian in FY20. Find out more

Chairman of Wipro Limited Azim Premji tops the list of philanthropists by donating Rs 22 crore.

New Delhi: IT major Wipro's Azim Premji donated Rs 22 crore a day or Rs 7,904 in a year to emerge as the most generous man in India.

Shiv Nadar, the founder of another IT major, HCL, had topped the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List, last year, secured second this year, with donations Rs 795 crore from April 2019 to March 2020.

India's richest man Mukesh Ambani, the chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries Limited, was third on the list, with donations of Rs458 crore, primarily for disaster relief.

Tycoons who made it to the top 10 lists are, Kumar Mangalam Birla (Rs 276 crore donation), Vedanta founder and chairman Anil Agarwal ( Rs 215 crore), Ajay Piramal (Rs 196 crore), Infosys co-founder and chairman Nandan Nilekani (Rs 159 crore), the Hinduja brothers (Rs 133 crore), Gautam Adani (Rs 88 crore) and Rahul Bajaj (Rs 74 crore).

This is the 7th annual ranking of the most generous individuals in India, which features individuals who have donated Rs5 crore or more during the period review.

The raging pandemic had the corporate honchos repurposing their donations to fight COVID infections, and the top giver is Tata Sons with Rs 1,500 crore commitment followed by Azim Premji at Rs 1,125 crore.

However, the primary cause for which both Mr Premji and Mr Nadar donated is education.
