GUWAHATI: Reports of a clash between Indian and Chinese security forces along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Tawang region of Arunachal Pradesh on Friday night emerged today.

According to sources, the clash led to injuries to personnel on both sides before they 'disengaged'.

Latest reports suggest that 6 Indian soldiers were injured and they are now receiving treatment at the Base hospital in Guwahati. The reports also suggest that more Chinese PLA soldiers were injured as the Indian bravehearts challenged them, although the numbers on this side of the LAC were considerably lower.

The Eastern Sector has mostly been quiet since the Indo- China war in 1962, although minor skirmishes were reported now and then, the last time being in 1986, according to an Indian Army officer posted in the sector.

On the night of Dec 9, 300 fully- armed PLA forces reportedly tried to enter Indian territory but they were fought back by Indian security forces. There was anticipation of such an event taking place and the Indian side was 'ready', reports suggest.

According to government sources, such confrontations had been taking place due to "differing perceptions" of the border since 2006.

There are reportedly six points of contention between the two countries in the Tawang sector. Both sides routinely carry out patrolling at these points, claimed by both India and China as theirs.

Sources said, "In certain areas along the LAC in the Tawang Sector in Arunachal Pradesh there are areas of differing perception, wherein both sides patrol the area upto their claim lines. This has been the trend since 2006. On 09 December 2022, Chinese troops contacted the LAC in Tawang Sector which was contested by own troops in a firm and resolute manner."

The Indian commander in the area held a flag meeting with his Chinese counterpart, as a follow-up of the incident, to comply with "structured mechanisms to restore peace and tranquility", the government sources said.

There have been recent construction of border roads in the area and this is a factor which has changed the dynamics, allowing for faster deployment of forces and weapons, say sources.
