Guwahati: A mountain climber hailing from India has passed away in Nepal while climbing the Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest peak.
The expedition organisers informed about his death on May 6 and this happened to be the third fatality of this year's busy Himalayan spring climbing season.
The deceased has been identified as Narayanan Iyer, a 52-year-old man who died on May 5 at a staggering altitude of 8,200 meters, near the top of Mount Kanchenjunga.
The organizers have revealed that Narayanan was slow as compared to others and the organizers also informed that they sent two guides along with him for assistance.
The climber was very exhausted while climbing the mountain as a result of which he could not climb further. Tragedy struck when he suddenly collapsed and died. The man's family has been informed about this unfortunate incident.
Iyer's death happens to be the third official reported climber death in Nepal this year.
Meanwhile, Kanchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world and its peak lies at 8,586 m (28,169 ft) in a section of the Himalayas, the Kangchenjunga Himal, which is bounded on the west by the Tamur River, in the north by the Lhonak Chu and Jongsang La, and in the east by the Teesta River.
It lies in the border region between the Indian state of Sikkim and Nepal, with three of the five peaks, namely Main, Central and South, directly on the border, and the peaks West and Kangbachen in Nepal's Taplejung District.
Kangchenjunga was presumed to be the highest mountain in the world until 1852, but calculations and measurements conducted by the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India in 1849 showed that Mount Everest, known as Peak XV at the time, is the highest in the world.
