MUMBAI: A technical problem onboard a helicopter belonging to the Indian Navy led to its emergency landing at the Arabian Sea off the Indian coast on Wednesday. A search and rescue mission was initiated immediately.

An indigenously developed Dhruv advanced light helicopter commonly called Dhruv AHL, belonging to the Indian Navy had to make an emergency landing in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Mumbai in India. A spokesperson of the Indian Navy mentioned that the problem happened during a routine sortie of the helicopter off Mumbai when it was ditched close to the coast. Ditching is a technical term, meaning an emergency landing on water.

There were three members onboard the Dhuv helicopter when the problem happened and all of them were rescued by a patrol vehicle of the Indian Navy. An enquiry has also been initiated regarding the incident.

“Indian Navy ALH on a routine sortie off Mumbai ditched close to the coast. Immediate Search and Rescue ensured safe recovery of crew of three by naval patrol craft,” mentioned the official Twitter handle of the Indian Navy.

The Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter is a twin-engine, multi-role new generation helicopter which was in the 5.5-ton weight category. The Centre for Military Airworthiness Certification had also certified this craft for military operations.
