New Delhi: The Allahabad High Court on Monday said that a married woman is extremely possessive about her husband and cannot bear to share him with others.

The observation was made by the bench comprising of Justice Rahul Chaturvedi, who upheld a trial court order thereby dismissing a discharge application filed by a man accused of abetting his wife`s suicide.

The court stated that the accused, Sushil Kumar, had married for the third time and the court was of the view that this was apparently the sole reason behind his wife committing suicide.

As far as wives are concerned, her husband secretly marrying another woman is "sufficient reason" to end her own life, the court further added.

"They (Indian wives) are literally possessive about their husband. It would be the biggest jolt for any married woman that her husband is being shared by some other lady or he is going to marry some other lady. In such awkward situation, it would be impossible to expect any sanity from them. Exactly the same thing happened in this case too," the bench said, as quoted by LiveLaw.

Earlier, the woman's husband had filed an instant revision plea and the matter is pertaining to this case.

An instant FIR had been lodged by the deceased woman at Manduadih police station in Varanasi against her husband Sushil Kumar and his six family members under multiple sections of the IPC.

The accused were charged with voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation, and marrying again during the lifetime of the spouse.

The woman alleged in the FIR that despite being already married and having two children, he tied the knot for the third time without getting a divorce. She also accused her husband and in-laws of assaulting and mentally torturing her.

According to reports, the woman poisoned herself to death soon after filing the FIR. The police launched an investigation and filed a charge sheet against the husband and his family members.

At first, the accused moved a discharge petition in the trial court, only to get rejected.

Thereafter, they approached the Allahabad High Court. Their plea was dismissed by the high court, who stated that there was enough evidence to prosecute the accused.
