New Delhi: In a major development, the Supreme Court (SC)-appointed technical committee on Sunday issued a public notice asking citizens to come forward and contact the committee, if they suspect that their mobile phones have been breached by Pegasus 'malware'.

The said notice also asked such citizens to explain why they believe their devices may have been breached by Pegasus malware, and whether they are in a position to allow the technical committee to investigate these devices.

"Those who suspect that their equipment has been breached should send an email to the technical committee before January 7, 2022," said a public notice issued in leading newspapers on Sunday.

"If the Committee considers that your cause for suspicion warrants further investigation, the Committee will request you to allow your equipment to be examined," the notice read.

"Also, you must provide a reason why you believe your device was breached with Pegasus malware, and whether you are in a position to allow the technical committee to examine your device," the notice added.

The notice also states that the place of collection of the mobile phone will be in New Delhi and it will be returned after completion of investigation/search.

Last year, a controversy erupted over the use of the Israeli spyware Pegasus for allegedly spying in India.

In October last year, the Supreme Court had directed a committee of experts to investigate whether the government used military-grade private Israeli Pegasus spyware to spy on opposition leaders, activists, industrialists, judges and journalists.
