NEW DELHI: In the early hours of Friday in the Rajouri district of Jammu & Kashmir, two people were killed and another injured after an Army sentry allegedly opened fire on them.
Both of the deceased were Phalyana locals in Rajouri.
There is a canteen inside the army barracks, and it looked that the guard had fired, according to SSP Chowdhary Mohammad Aslam, the chief of the Rajouri district police.
Following the fatalities, villagers protested, some of whom turned to throw stones, according to SHO Rajouri inspector Fareed Ahmad, and some even stopped the Jammu-Poonch highway.
The two killed adolescents were employed by the army as porters, according to an army officer. The injured person has been admitted to the hospital and is stable.
Senior authorities from the police and civil administration had arrived to handle the situation.
According to a local, at around 6:15 am, three young people who regularly went to the army canteen around 5 or 6 a.m. were being fired upon by the sentry as they approached the Alpha gate. Three of them were murdered immediately, while the third is fighting for his life in the hospital.
Residents incensed by the incident wanted strong punishment and fair compensation for the victim's family.
It is still unknown what led to the firing.
The White Knight Corps, commonly known as 16 Corps, of the Army, which is stationed in Nagrota, reported about the incident on their official social media account.
