JAMMU: Indian security forces gunned down a terrorist along the line of Line of Control (LoC) as it foiled an infiltration bid across the border by two terrorists on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district in the wee hours, a defence official said on Monday.

The Indian Army said that one of the terrorists was killed during a gunfight near the LoC, while the other was hit and seen moving off from the area. The body of the slain militant is yet to be retrieved from the scene of the encounter, even as the operation was in progress, it was stated.

Jammu-based Defence Ministry spokesman Lt Colonel Suneel Bartwal said the army saw two individuals moving across LoC in the general area of Degwar Terva. The army challenged them, and in the ensuing firefight, one terrorist was seen falling down while the second was observed moving towards Pintu Nala, he added.

In a statement, Lt Colonel Suneel Bartwal said: “Infiltration bid was foiled in Poonch district. In a joint operation by Indian Army and the local police in the early hours of August 6-7 two infiltrating terrorists were engaged by the joint teams of army and police.”

"One terrorist fell down immediately, second terrorist tried to run back to the LoC. He was engaged and hit and was seen falling down near the LoC. Operation is still in progress,” the PRO said.

Security officials said that it was due to the alert Indian troops in Degwar sector that they observed some terrorists trying to sneak in from the other side of the LoC under the cover of darkness and subsequently they engaged the interlopers in an encounter.

An ambush party of the army engaged in a firefight with the terrorists in the Garhi battalion area at around 2 am, informed Lt Col Suneel Bartwal.

In the meantime, security personnel informed that the whole area has been cordoned off to prevent anyone from escaping and a search operation is currently underway.

A similar incident took place on Sunday, when Indian Army and Kupwara police foiled an infiltration attempt at Tanghdhar Sector. A terrorist was said to have been killed while trying to infiltrate across the LoC in Amrohi area of Tanghdhar sector, defence sources said.
