Know More About The Mahaparinirvan Diwas And Its Relation With Dr B.R. Ambedkar

New Delhi: On 6 December 1956, the father of the Indian Constitution and the champion of Dalit rights Dr. B.R.Ambedkar passed away and this day has been commemorated as the Mahaparinirvan Diwas in order to pay tributes to him.

His devotees gather at the Chaitya Bhoomi (Dadar Chowpatty Beach in Mumbai), on this day to remember his impeccable legacy.

Parinirvan is a Sanskrit term that has a deep-rooted meaning in Buddhist traditions and is one of the major principles and goals of Buddhism. It refers to the one who attains nirvana during his lifetime and after his death.

According to the Buddhist text Mahaparinibbana Sutta, the demise of Lord Buddha at the age of 80 is considered to be the original Mahaparinirvan. Buddha's followers believe that he had attained "Nirvana."

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar converted to Buddhism after studying the faith extensively. He became a Buddhist icon and a guru. His supporters were of the view that he was as influential, pure, and blessed as Lord Buddha himself. He got recognized as a Buddhist leader on 14 October 1956 in Nagpur in the presence of nearly 5,00,000 supporters.

His contribution to the eradication of untouchability in India was immense. He also bought the reservation system into existence in India to ensure adequate representation of the impoverished and underprivileged sections of the society.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar played an instrumental role in the making of the Indian Constitution and was the chairman of the drafting committee. He held a number of portfolios during the course of his illustrious political career. The most prominent one was when he served as the first Law Minister of India from 1947 to 1951 during the Nehru administration.

Apart from politics, he also happened to be a prolific student earning doctorates in economics from both Columbia University and the London School of Economics and also gaining a reputation as a scholar for his research in law, economics, and political science. He was also an economist, lawyer, and professor during the early part of his career.
