Lalu Prasad Yadav Granted Bail By Jharkhand HC In Doranda Treasury Case

NEW DELHI: The president of RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal) and former Union Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav has been granted bail in the case of 136 crore Doranda Treasury scam.

On Friday 22 April, the Jharkhand High Court granted bail to the politician after a bail petition was submitted seeking the suspension of the sentence.

A CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) court had earlier announced 5-year imprisonment to Yadav for his involvement in a fodder scam case which showed embezzlement of Rupees 139 crore from Doranda Treasury.

The former chief minister of Bihar, Yadav continued to remain in custody since his conviction and sentencing by the CBI court.

The lawyer of the convict, Prabhat Kumar informed that a bail plea was submitted to the Jharkhand HC pleading that Yadav has already completed half of his sentence period.

A certified copy of the trial court was also submitted stating that Yadav has spent more than 41 months in jail informed his counsel.

Kumar further said that the court has accepted the petition and granted bail to Yadav after long-term imprisonment.

He also stated that the HC's order will be discussed with the lower court by next week on Tuesday after which they will submit the bail document for obtaining the release order.

In the 5th fodder scam case, the former Union Minister of Railways and ex-MLA was slapped with a fine of Rupees 60 lakh by the CBI court in Ranchi.

A few days ago on 8 April, CBI informed Justice Apares Kuma Singh that the agency is unable to comply with the previous court order to register an affidavit and asked for more time.

On this, the 73-year-old confined leader's representative Kapil Sibal stated that Yadav deserves to be released because he has served more than half of the sentence announced.
