Legendary footballer PK Banerjee passes away in Kolkata hospital

KOLKATA: Legendary footballer PK Banerjee passed away at a Kolkata hospital today. He was 83. He was suffering from prolonged illness. He breathed his last at 12:40 pm, claimed a family member.

On March 18, Banerjee’s health had deteriorated and he was on full ventilator support, the hospital said.

“He is on ventilator support in the intensive care unit for more than two weeks now and since yesterday inspite of best efforts his clinical condition has deteriorated further and he remains to be in very critical condition at present. Currently he is under full ventilator support,” a statement from Medica Superspecialty Hospital said.

“Team of treating doctors have briefed the family about his condition.

“The multidisciplinary team of consultants are closely watching his clinical condition and extending all possible support,” it added.

Banerjee was battling a chest infection for a month and was being treated by a panel of specialists.

Banerjee’s name has often been associated with the golden period of Indian football during which the country won prestigious tournaments.

He was honoured with many awards including Padma Shri and Arjuna Award.

He was awarded the Centennial Order of Merit in 2004 by FIFA.
