Mumbai: The Eknath Shinde government on Monday comfortably surpassed the majority mark and won the trust vote after two weeks of political turmoil in Maharashtra.

The new coalition government easily got 164 votes in the 288-member house, while the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) managed to grab 99 votes.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis congratulated the Shinde and said that he is a loyal Shiv Sainik.

Fadnavis further thanked all members who reposed their faith in the Shinde government.

''I thank all those who by staying out of House indirectly helped BJP-Shinde alliance,'' he added.

Meanwhile, another two MLAs of the Uddhav Thackeray faction, Santosh Bangar and Shyamsundar Shinde joined the Eknath Shinde camp just before the trust vote.

On Sunday, Rahul Narvekar of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was elected as the Maharashtra Assembly Speaker.

Narvekar is a BJP MLA from Colaba Assembly in Mumbai. In the year 2019, before the Maharashtra Assembly elections, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. Earlier, he had been associated with NCP and Shiv Sena.

Riding on the support of rebel MLAs, who still have faith in Balasaheb's Hindutva ideology, Eknath Sambhaji Shinde rode the high tides of Maharashtra politics to become the 20th Chief Minister and outcast Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray from the top post.
