MUMBAI: A constable of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) allegedly opened fire inside a moving train near Mumbai on Monday morning in the Jaipur-Mumbai superfast express. The incident led to the death of four people including his senior official. The incident caused severe panic among the passengers.
The accused was identified as Chetan Singh and was taken into custody at the next station after he was apprehend as he had jumped off and train and tried to flee. He was arrested at the Palghar station after killing his senior named Tikaram Meena.
The Inspector General of the Railway Protection Force for the Western Railway, Praveen Sinha mentioned that the accused was very hot-headed. He also mentioned that there was no altercation and he lost his temper and shot dead his senior, proceeding to shoot anyone else he saw.
The shooter Chetan Singh is said to hail from the city of Hathras in Uttar Pradesh, while victim Tikaram Meena was engaged as an Assistant Sub Inspector of the Railway Protection Force and belonged to the city of Sawai Madhopur in the state of Rajasthan. He was due retirement from the job in the year 2025. A financial compensation of Rs 25 lakh with additional assistance of Rs 15 lakh has been announced for the family of the victim.
The railway department also mentioned that the family members of the other victims will also be compensated for their loss and a departmental investigation has already been initiated. The other personnel who were on duty at that time were also questioned by the authorities regarding the incident.
It must be mentioned that a total of four Railway Protection Force personnel including Chetan Singh and Tikaram Meena had boarded the train from Surat station in Gujarat and were on escort duty for the safety of the long-distance train.
