Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee on Wednesday was re-elected as the TMC chairperson.

According a report by national news agency, the Trinamool Congress held its organistional elections after a gap of five years.

The reports further claimed that Banerjee was declared elected without a contest as no other leader entered the fray.

"A total of 48 proposers and seconders had submitted nominations in favour of Mamata Banerjee. As there was no other nomination for the post of chairperson, Mamata Banerjee has been re-elected unopposed," PTI quoted TMC Secretary General Partha Chatterjee as saying.

In 1998, after parting ways with Congress, Mamta Banerjee founded the Trinamool Congress and headed it ever since.

After two unsuccessful attempts in 2001 and 2006, the party eventually came into power in 2011 after defeating the mighty Left Front regime.

After 2011, it again came into power in last year May after bagging 213 out of the 294 seats in the state assembly.
