Man from Haryana ends up with burns while using hand sanitizer in kitchen

NEW DELHI: A man from Haryana burnt himself while using hand sanitizer in kitchen. He was sanitizing his keys and mobile phone and his wife was cooking in the kitchen, when his kurta caught fire. The man has received 35 % burns. His face, neck, chest, abdomen have received burns.

"With people using sanitisers for everything these days, this should serve as a warning that they not use it in the kitchen or wherever there is an open flame,” Dr Mahesh Mangal, chairman of department of plastic and cosmetic surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital told media as sanitizers have high alcohol content.

Hand sanitizers can prove effective against germs, but there are some risks that people must be aware of. For hand sanitizers to be effective alcohol content should be above 60% but if alcohol content is below that, hand sanitizers may not prove to be that effective.

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are classified as Class IFlammable Liquid substances. This means they have a flash point of less than 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Hand sanitizer vapors can be flammable.

While alcohol-based hand rubs are flammable, hand sanitizers with good alcohol content can pose a fire risk to aircraft. It is a Class 3 Flammable Liquid.
