Every year, India observes Martyr's Day or Shaheed Divas on two different dates. First on January 30 which is the 1st of Martyr's Day to pay tribute to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi who got assassinated by Nathuram Godse. Secondly, on March 23 and this is the 2nd martyr's Day to honour the sacrifice of the great freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Rajguru, and the countless heroes who took part in the freedom struggle and sacrifice their lives for the nation.
Martyr's Day is being celebrated by India along with fifteen other countries to pay honour and respect to the courageous champions.
This day is marked to pay tribute to the great Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi who played a crucial part in the freedom struggle; got assassinated by Nathuram Godse in the Birla House on January 30, 1948.
Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev were executed in Lahore for their revolutionary actions against the British Empire on March 23, 1931. The trio was condemned to death for conspiring to kill a British police officer, John P Saunders. The execution happened a day before the scheduled date.
In India Martyr's Day is being observed to mark the death anniversary of the great leader, Mahatma Gandhi, and also to pay tribute and honour to the countless renowned freedom fighters who sacrificed their blood and soul in the journey of India's Independence.
Mahatma Gandhi is known as the 'Father of the Nation' who played a crucial role in the Indian Freedom struggle. India knows him by the name of 'Bapu'. He was assassinated on January 30, 1948, by Nathuram Godse in the Birla House.
On Martyr's Day, the Honorable President of India, vice president, prime minister, and defence minister gather at Rajghat, Mahatma Gandhi's Samadhi. All the dignitaries pay homage to Gandhi and remember his brave contributions during the freedom struggle. The Armed Forces personnel and Inter-services Contingent of the country give an honourable salute to the martyrs. The people gathered at the place and condole for 2 minutes in the memory of Bapu and other martyrs of the country.
The Central Government has announced two minutes of condolence in every state and union territory on January 30 to pay respect and honour to the great leaders who lost their lives for India's Independence.
"In the past, it has been observed that while two minutes' silence is observed in some offices, the general public goes about its occupation in the ordinary course, unmindful of the solemnity of the occasion. The State and Union territories governments are requested to ensure that the Martyrs' Day is observed with due solemnity," the Ministry of Home Affairs said in its order earlier.
