New Delhi: Dates for the annual bilateral summit between India and Japan will be announced very soon, Raveesh Kumar, Official Spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs, India informed media during a press briefing.
"We are in contact with the Japanese side through diplomatic channels. We hope to be able to complete the appointment soon,” he said.
This comes after the meeting between PM Narendra Modi of India and Shinzo Abe of Japan was postponed due to widespread protests in Guwahati, the original venue for the summit where the two leaders were set to meet in December.
Both India and Japan had decided Guwahati as the venue focusing on north-eastern India under the Act East Forum. The Act East Forum, propagated by India and Japan is an effort to expand bilateral cooperation across northeast India to strengthen ties between India-Japan. The forum also stresses collaboration between the two countries under India’s Act East Policy and Japan’s Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy.
Northeast India has become one of the most preferred regions for Japanese investments. Earlier in June, a statement released after a meeting between Japanese delegation and DoNER officials stated that Japan is willing to invest about Rs 13,000 crores in the north-eastern region of India.
