GUWAHATI: In what could be termed as a shocking event for the education scenario in India, the UniversityGrants Commission (UGC) today blacklisted a total number of 24 self-styled institutes and deemed them as fake universities. This was revealed by the ministry of education in a press statement released on Monday. The UGC's website www.ugc.ac.in has published a state-wise list with details of these fake universities.

The ministry of education informed this in the Lok Sabha on Monday, August 2, and said that the the decision was based on the complaints that the ministry has received from the students, parents, and through various media houses including electronic and print. The University Grants Commission took this major step of declaring these 24 self-styled institutes as fake universities as per the protocols of the educations department.

The ministry of education in the release highlighted specifically two educational institutes namely, the Bhartiya Shiksha Parishad based in Lucknow, UP, and the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM), Qutub Enclave in New Delhi for their role in violating the UGC Act, 1956 that guarantees fair and justified the education system in the country.

The education ministry in its statement released in the Lok Sabha on Monday, further noted that the UGC has specifically mentioned the following directives that are to be taken into consideration against these fake or otherwise non- recognized universities:

The statement read the following points,

1. The UGC issues Public Notices about the list of fake universities/institutes in National Hindi and English Newspapers.

2. The UGC writes letters to State Chief Secretaries, Education Secretaries, and Principal Secretaries to take action against fake universities/institutes located in their jurisdiction.

3. Show Cause Notices/Warning Notices are issued to the unauthorized institutes awarding invalid degrees when any self-styled institution is found/noticed functioning in violation of the UGC Act, 1956.

Additionally, the the statement stated that state-wise details of fake universities are available on UGC's website www.ugc.ac.in.

It may be mentioned that, from time to time, the ministry of education has played an active role in curbing down scrupulous universities from functioning and has restricted them from playing with the careers and lives of the students work hard day and night in order to achieve a recognized degree for a successful career ahead.
