Parliament's Monsoon Session Commences with Obituary References and Vows for Public Welfare

NEW DELHI: The Monsoon Session of the Indian Parliament commenced with somber moments of obituary references on Thursday morning. Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned for specific durations as a mark of respect to the departed members.

In the Lok Sabha, the session began with the oath-taking ceremony of Sushil Kumar Rinku, a prominent leader from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), who won the election from Jalandhar, Punjab. The oath was administered in Punjabi, reaffirming the diverse linguistic fabric of India.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla solemnly read out the obituary references for two sitting members and 11 former members who had passed away during the inter-session period. The entire House observed a moment of silence as a tribute to these late members.

Similarly, in the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Jagdeep Singh Dhankar paid tribute to the departed member Hardwar Dubey. The House, too, observed a moment of silence to honor the late member and other former members who had passed away during the inter-session period.

The Monsoon Session, being a crucial period for legislative discussions and decision-making, saw opposition members giving adjournment motion notices in both Houses to demand discussions on various pressing issues, including the situation in Manipur, which has been marred by ethnic violence.

Prior to the proceedings, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his confidence in the MPs' ability to utilize the session for the welfare of the public. He emphasized the importance of robust and sharp discussions, stating that they lead to better decisions that have a far-reaching impact on the country's well-being.

During his remarks, the Prime Minister also addressed the recent incident of two women being paraded naked in Manipur, expressing his anguish and asserting that the perpetrators would not be spared. He called for tightening law and order across states and stressed that the dignity and honor of women must be upheld above all political considerations.

The Monsoon Session agenda includes discussions on several crucial bills, such as the Personal Data Protection Bill, among others. With 31 bills on the government's agenda, this session promises to be a momentous one, shaping policies and legislations to address key issues affecting the nation.

As the Monsoon Session unfolds, all eyes remain on the Parliament to witness the outcomes of the debates and discussions. The hope is that the elected representatives will work together to prioritize public welfare and collectively make decisions that positively impact the lives of the people they serve.
