The Central Trade Unions (CTUs) along with various sectoral independent federations and associations will participate in a National General Strike on January 8, 2020.

Around 25 crore people are expected to participate in the strike, the CTU stated in a release.

"The Ministry of Labour failed to assure on any of the demands of workers which called a meeting on 2nd January 2020. The attitude of the Government is that of contempt towards labour as we construe from its policies and actions. It is more than 4 years, there is no Indian Labour conference since the last held in July 2015," said the union body.

In addition to 10 trade unions, some 60 organizations of students and elected office-bearers of some universities are expected to gather in solidarity to protest against the raised fee structures and commercialization of education.

The protest is against the government failing to tackle crises ridden economy, informed the union bodies.

Bank unions like the All India Bank Employees’ Association (AIBEA) and Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI) will join with central trade unions on January 8 to protest against the economic and labour policies of the BJP government. The bank unions have asked the members to abstain from work on the day. The strike will cause disruption of ATM services and will also affect services in various branches. Net banking services and other online services will not get affected.
