Mumbai: Maximum City Mumbai celebrated the least noisy Diwali this season after a gap of 15 long years. A noise level of 105.5 decibels was recorded on Saturday before 10pm which was the deadline for bursting of crackers at the Shivaji Park ground, a silence zone of the city until next morning, Sunday.
The maximum noise levels in Mumbai for three consecutive years were 112.3 decibels (dB) in 2019, 114.1 dB in 2018 and 117.8 dB in 2017.
BMC (Brinhanmumbai Municipal Corporation) banned bursting of crackers to keep a check on COVID spread.
Sumaira Abdulali, the founder of Awaaz Foundation gave full credit to the Maharashtra government for enforcing such guidelines and to the people for their growing awareness, which made it possible to achieve this feat.
The Maharashtra government had assured Bombay High Court (HC) that the order passed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) regarding the total ban on bursting and selling of firecrackers will be taken seriously.
The ban was implemented in nine areas including Ambernath, Badlapur, Chandrapur, Dombivli, Nagpur, Thane, Mumbai, Vasai and Virar, and 14 other urban areas of the state.
