MUMBAI: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized heroin weighing 283 kg on Monday, which fixed at around Rs 2,000 crore in the global market. The officials, around the same time, intercepted a massive consignment of drugs that smuggled into Mumbai from Iran via sea.

Sources said that the consignment was to be moved to Punjab by road from Mumbai's Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Navi Mumbai. The DRI stated that the seized heroin was hidden in two containers with talcum powder stones.

Officials said that a supplier from Punjab's Taran Tarn region, Prabhjit Singh, has been arrested regarding the situation alongside two others from Madhya Pradesh.

Last week, in Guwahati, the Special Operation Group (SOG) under the Central Police District had seized 599 gm heroin esteemed at around Rs 1.5 crore from a shop at Birubari. The shop's (RCM) proprietor, Arun Yadav, had been arrested in such a manner. According to a police source, Yadav took the SOG team to Dakhingaon on the appearance of showing stored drug consignments and attempted to get away. He was shot at during his escape attempt and admitted to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Two additional people had been arrested in this connection — Sanchal Nath and Riman Sarma from the Lachit Nagar. The police seized a scooter and recovered Rs 3,000 cash from their ownership.

Similarly, on June 28, customs authorities at the Delhi Airport had blocked two South African nationals with heroin worth Rs 126 crore in their ownership. Authorities said on Monday that over the last six months, customs officials at the Delhi International Airport have seized heroin worth over Rs 600 crore.

The officials further stated that in August last year, the Mumbai Customs and DRI had seized 191 kg of heroin worth around Rs 1,000 crore which was accepted to have originated from Afghanistan, from a cargo container at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust.
